Review:

Jekyll & Hyde

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson back in 1886, is a story that has stuck in the minds of many; and proof of that is the Jeckyll & Hyde pub in Edinburgh. The famous story itself is relatively dark and murky, so as you can imagine, the Jeckyll & Hyde pub follows the same theme.

As you walk in you’re met with a seemingly dark atmosphere, but when you actually take a look at what surrounds you, the décor certainly matches its name. The bar almost has an old church feel to it with its Victorian style wood and layout, and there are creepy, suggestive fixtures around the pub that make it almost eerie. The best part of the décor is definitely the hidden door that looks like a bookcase; even though it took me about 5 minutes of walking into walls to find the door...

But despite the slightly intimidating décor, Jekyll & Hyde has a relaxed atmosphere for having a meal out or even just a few drinks.

The service was great and the menu has a wide range of options, but it is definitely pub grub. Who doesn’t love that though?

To start, I shared chips topped with cheese and BBQ pulled pork (£4.95): it was delicious as it sounds.

For the mains I had fish and chips (£6.95) and my partner had the chicken, cheese and bacon burger (£7.95). I am a huge fan of fish and chips, and I have it almost everywhere I go; so you can almost call me an expert on this particular dish. But I have to admit, although the fish itself was lovely and white, the batter was too greasy for my liking. However, I may have felt differently if I had gone for dinner instead of lunch; maybe it was just a bit too much for that time of day.

My partner loved his meal: the burger was fresh and just right, and the chips were a perfect side (of course they were, it is burger and chips).

The prices were standard for the kind of food served, but for the students out there they do student discount and two meals for £8 if you pick off the selected menu!

All in all the meal was good enough that I would definitely return, but I might not choose the fish and chips next time.
